The Abdullahs struggle to stay afloat
Born in 1905, into a Kashmiri shawl weaver’s family, Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah stands till date as the tallest leader of Kashmir. He formed the National Conference. However by 1953, Abdullah fell from New Delhi’s favour & was imprisoned again, this time for 11 years. After the 1974 Indira-Sheikh accord, Abdullah became Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir. In 1981, he appointed his son Farooq Abdullah, who had spent many years in Britain as a doctor, as his heir apparent. After his father’s death in 1982, the political novice became the CM. His government was dismissed in 1984, but three years later, he would return again after winning an election, which allegedly experienced large-scale rigging. After having fled to Britain during militancy, he returned to power in 1996 and remained in saddle, till the Congress-PDP alliance came into power in 2002.
